| Need book suggestions |
[Dec. 26th, 2006|03:02 pm] |
I am making my list of books to read in the next year. Based on the community "50 book challenge" I am attempting to read 50 books by December 31st of 2008. While that challenge calls for 50 books read in one year, I'm giving myself two years to do so. That way I can take my time reading them and actually enjoy reading them.
So far, I have 48 books on my list. I need two more. Everyone, leave me suggestions.
And, I absolutely refuse to read The Life of Pi or The DaVinci Code or anything remotley similar to those, because I find those books to be (a) uninteresting and uncaptivating, and (b) full of shit and poorly written [mainly the DVC - read the first pages and wanted to kick it across the room].
So, just fire away folks. |

oh yeah, a synopsis: | (Link)

it has a really interesting narrative style, jumping back and forth between four seemingly unrelated story lines. it devles into native american tribal culture using analogies including a story line involving jesus and another involving tonto and the lone ranger. if you are interested in native american lit, i can send you on your way to some good books. for example, i haven't read any of sherman alexi's yet, but he's an amazing speaker so i bet it translates into his writing.
also, a book that is a-number-one on my list: house of leaves by ____ danielowski. i haven't read it yet (it's waiting for me in honolulu) so i can't tell you want it's about but i can tell you why i'm reading. if you think ee cummings has an interesting way of laying his words out on a page, you _need_ to flip through this book. it's an incredible waste of paper (i.e. does not use the maximum number of words per page). i'm very excited about it.

I love Sherman Alexie. He's fabu. So, I'm sure I'll enjoy the suggestion!
And, I love ee cummings, so I'll check out the danielowski dude/book.
peter weiss "the investigation"
there is no good time to read this book (drama) and afterwards you won't have any words to talk about it with even if you know someone who's read it. there is no punctuation. there is no protagonist and therefore no sympathy/empathy/identification.
peter weiss modeled it after the divine comedy. this one is 'paradise' but he never wrote the other two.
I know you're an English Lit major, but I don't know how much Russian Literature you've read. Here are my favorites: Anna Karenina (one of my top 5 favorites) We (Awesome sci-fi book, 1984-esque) One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich (This is about one day in the life of a prisoner, a short, easy read but still great). Also, I'm sure you've read this but in just in case you haven't, Mists of Avalon. Best book ever. (It's too bad you don't like Orson Scott Card, he's my idol)
I read Ivan Denisovich. Hated it!
But, I haven't read Mists of Avalon, and want to!
I read the Life of Pi. It was ehhh.
Read Fall on Your Knees by Anne Marie MacDonald. Or The Only Girl in the Car by Kathie Dobie. The Glass Castle, by Jeanette Walls is also fan-fucking-tastic.
Do NOT read the Time Traveller's Wife!!! What a piece of shit that thing was. I just started the Kite Runner yesterday.I am on my second book, and at this rate hope to make the fifty. I am on page 121 of The Kite Runner, and love it so far. | |
